I feel like a total n00b, but I have to ask.

When I first started checking for nitrites, I thought both drops were clear. The last couple times I've done the test, the 2nd drops are yellow. Is my test contaminated? Would this give a false reading? :1zhelp:

My tank's been cycling now for 11 days. After a couple days of flake food, I've got a medium shrimp hanging out and getting mushy - really helped kick up the ammonia! I've been at 5.0 for about 4 days now, but my nitrites are still coming back at <0.3 mg/l.

I do have plants in the tank. Some annoying hornwort (reeeally close to tossing it) :irked:, moneywort, crypt willisii, just added dwarf sag and a bit of flame moss today. Perhaps the plants are stalling the nitrite development?

Any thoughts? Should I sit on my hands for another couple weeks? :nilly:

Look at the instructions of your kit. You have to shake the second bottle. That's why it's not consistent is my guess... you haven't been shaking it.

my nitIte test is only one bottle. my nitrAte test is 2 bottles and you have to shake bottle number two. yes the second bottle is yellow.

If you are using API's liquid test kit, bottle #1 is supposed to be yellow. Bottle #2 is a clear liquid, and it does need to be shaken for 30 seconds before putting into the tube (that liquid also needs to be shaken before adding bottle 2) regardless of being shaken <I have forgotten to do this sometimes> the liquid should still be clear and I have not noticed a difference with test results.

I'm using Tetra's kit... two bottles, instructions do not say to shake the bottle. Well, I'll give it a few days and otherwise pick up a nitrite kit. Thanks all!

It took 4 weeks to cycle my 68 gallon tank, full of plants and some fish.
Best thing I did was buy an api master test kit (thanks for suggesting, all)
I didnt lose my fish, I tested ammonia every day, and water changed when it rose.
OH and the shop sells the aPI kit for $50 and $60 but I bought mine online from thereefshop.com.au for $30!
