Can this work? Currently I have 5 goldfish in a 75 gallon tank, filtration is 2 sponge filters and a powerhead that drives a 3 layer overhead filter

Here's a picture

I'm planning to remove the 3 layer OHF filter, and just add lots of plants, particularly water lettuce, can this work?

Also will goldfish eat water sprite?

doing this to save on electricity and also reduce nitrate by using water lettuce, i tried adding water lettuec with the overhead filter but they don't like getting splashed by the OHF.

Not sure about your filtration system. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I use internals on my goldie tanks, myself, but with fancies a lot of people go the sponge route successfully.

As to the water sprite-- yes they will. It's a salad bar for them. Water lettuce is a good choice, b/c it multiplies so rapidly and they love it. I also use duckweed, but it is an ungodly mess in the tank when they don't clean it all up. (which is rare-- they are one of the only fish that will clean out duckweed.)

thanks :) I'll also try to get some duckweed. will try to add as much plants as possible since this tank gets sunlight.

Don't be in too much of a rush to try duckweed unless you really want it. It is very invasive and difficult to get rid of if you don't want it EVERYWHERE! Good luck with the goldies and plants!

Najas grass, Anacharis/Elodea and hornwort have all worked for me in goldfish tanks.

It might be the photo, but your water looks kind of yellowish...does it test ok? Nitrates are hard to keep down in goldie tanks. Also, if you don't have 'liquid rock' tap water the aquarium will acidify quickly with goldfish...so you may consider adding a buffer when you do your weekly W/Cs. Just something as simple as baking soda and Epsom salt will help.

thanks :) i think duckweed would be ok :) Its really hot here this summer, temperature reach 40 Deg :( my tank is greenish, might be due to algae, since the tank gets sunlight, 1 problem is my tank's temp gets a little high, but they seem to be able to survive, rainy season is coming in 2 weeks.
so i can use elodea? won't the goldfish eat all the elodea?
I have some crushed corals in my tank since out water here is soft.

Some goldfish do eat elodea, but like water lettuce it will grow quickly enough to bounce back from some nibbling. You should feed your goldies other greens so that they leave your plants alone somewhat. I give mine zucchini, cucumber, squash, dark leaf lettuce, shelled peas and nori (roasted seaweed for sushi). They love any fresh greens. Some even like fruit like bananas, grapes, berries.

40 Celsius = 104 degrees Fahrenheit, yikes! :22_yikes:

yup its reallyhot this year, i think the hottest i've experienced. hopefully summer will be over soon.

I will try to add veggies to their diet, their current diet is Hikari Lion head sinking pellets.

I hope they have window fans and lemonade in the Phillipines :D I wouldn't feel like doing anything in that kind of heat. I would just be sleeping all day ;)
