Is this True?

I was talking with someone at a fish store in town and they told me you should never keep two Ryukins together or they will fight eachother. Being a lover of calico Ryukin I was wondering if this statement was true before I risk adding a second to my 55 gallon tank?

I have never heard of this before. Goldfish can be territorial under two conditions: 1. they're getting ready to spawn or 2. the size of the tank is too small. Of course it depends on the personality of the fish, but Ryukins fighting to the death sounds preposterous to me-- especially in a 55 gallon tank (assuming they are the only inhabitants.) Sounds like a new strain "Siamese fighting Ryukins."

The person probably just had a personal experience with them fighting - probably for the reasons stated above. Any fish will fight with its own kind if put into too small a space. Imagine two big Ryukins in a 20 gallon tank! However much of the literature still says "10 gallons per goldfish"

i dont even think it is posable for two slow swimming fish with no teath, stabbers or even any sort of mouth dextarity
what are they gona do bump each other to death? kiss each other to death? they may be able to have a mini sumo match but thats about it
cumon now think for a minute youre talking about the ones that need to "waddle" with all fins going at max to move a few inches in a random direction ?
youre talking about the ones that if they move too fast theyl tilt on theyr axis and end up upside down?
THEY CANT EVEN BITE!
all they can do is swim at each other with thair mouths open and you think THAT THEY CAN ENGAGE IN MORTAL COMBAT!
lol go ahead an get another hele probably like a buddy more than being alone

You might be surprised, and they certainly could rip each others fins. However, I would be shocked if they did fight if they were in an appropriately sized tank. A comet-type goldie could harass a fancy type tough.

A 55g should be fine for two ryukins. It could have been his own experience. Doesn't necessarily apply in general. I've never seen two goldfish in my own experience fight to death. Harassments are possible though especially if they are cramped for space or initiating their spawning methods. That was clearly unusual though.

yup, ya gotta watch for the fightin' goldfish!!! ::rollseyes::

I have one Ryukin with a normal fantailed fish. I've had to separate the pair of them from my other fantail because the Ryukin started attacking my gold fantail. He's never bothered attacking the white fantail. To be honest him and the white fantail follow each other. I also have an apple snail that I have had to move to another tank because both the Ryukin and white fantail attack the poor thing.

My experience has been that my one ryukin is the perhaps the most docile of the fancies I keep. He's literally a pushover, what with the rounded body and odd buoyancy. Maybe two together would be different, but I'm pretty sure he would lose a fight sooner than start one.
