Is it possible to buy a Verizon Blackberry (used) and use it without a data plan?

No. You have to purchase a data package. And not the cheap $9.99 plan. You have to buy the 29.99 plan. I just got a blackberry for my kid and ran into that problem.

Unless they have changed some things: I am pretty sure that you can get it to work without the data plan but here is the problem, you have to sign up for it and then cancel it right away. The phone automatically connects to the servers every few minutes so you are going to get a HUGE data bill at the end of the month.

Also, why get a blackberry without a data plan?

I ran into this problem when upgrading phones at the end of my contract this summer. They only have about four or five phones that do not require at least the $9.99/month package. Everything is 3G now apparently...

I knew someone would ask, I love BrickBreaker?

I'm currently using the Chocolate Touch, and according to the Verizon Website I'm required to have the 9.99 dollar plan, which I don't. So I'm questioning Verizon when they say Berries need the 29.99 plan.

I got the new LG EnV which requires the data package but almost my entire family has the "older" phones (which are the same) but they do not need it because they renewed earlier. Even if I were to just get the same phone I had but just a new one I would have to add the data package to my contract.

If you activate an older blackberry they may not make you sign up but I know that almost all new phones regardless of whether or not they needed the data package in the past now need them. They had literally 5-6 phones displayed that do NOT have to have one. And most of the "smart" phones need the $29.99 package if I am not mistaken, which is the unlimited package.

I'm not sure when Verizon made the switch to almost exclusively 3G but I was not happy with it...luckily our bundle had a lot more minutes than we need so we were able to offset the cost by downgrading that...

There may be a way to get around it, but I am pretty sure that whoever you speak with when transferring phones will mention getting a data package.
