I would like any advice available from people who have used kiddie pools to breed fish ourdoors in the summer. I have 2 150gal vatss and plan on a couple of pools. I plan to grow out some S. Amrerican Cichlids in one vat, endlers and corys in a pool, endlers and marble crayfish in a pool, S. American Cichlids, (Meekies), Leeri Goraumis, corys and Least Killies in another vat and maybe another pool or two of endlers. Also looking for anyone who has a large group of livebearers or corys they want to sell cheap. they

I was also thinking about trying some cherry shrimp, any good ideas or advise?

The color of them and shallow depth will both likely have an effect on water temperature.

depending on your location, that will determine if it would be a problem or not.

I've thought about doing that myself... I thought that given the surface area and the sun, that evaporation would be an issue? I'd love to know if it is possible to use these pools for fish in the summer.

Where are you located? And what plants are you planning on using in your tubs/vats? What sort of equipment (if any) are you planning on using to filter/aerate them?

Shade is essential if it gets very hot, but the problem with putting them under trees is that during the hottest months there is so much leaf litter and pollen that you need to stick to a nearly daily regimen of skimming...unless you build some sort of cover. Either something big enough for the entire lot of them, or individual covers for each one.

I have a 60" outdoor wading pool, this year everything just came back from dormancy and I put nothing new in. I have tons of cherry shrimp and snails, but not much else (least killies would have done fine too). The shrimp really don't mind the leaf litter, and my water is hard enough that it doesn't make much difference (7.8 out of the tap, about 7.2 in the pool). What is your tap water like?

Mixing Least Killies with Meeki Cichlids in the same pool will result in some well fed Meekis.

That is the idea. I have prepared a stone retaining area so the little guys can slip out. The Meekis are 2" so I will also add some pre-hit endlers females. I want the Meekies to spawn in the fall.

Your thoughts?

I have a protected area that should only get sun a few hours daily. That should keep the temps down and limit yard trash. I will be adding a clean up crew of either corys or marble cray fish to each pool. I have hides for the cleaners and will use duck weed and hornwart. I have an air pump / 40 that currently runs over 20 tanks. I have whisper Power filters on stands to rotate and will use 100gal sponge filters.

Anything else I should consider?

I'm in St. Louis. I have shade most of the day. I also have a ton of duckweed, so I don't think I'll have problems as long as the density is low.

I did this 15 years ago and it works. I'll be using blow up pools, 250gal from Walmart--$25. They are 15" deep.
