First, thanks for all who have helped me with my new 90 gallon freshwater
with two Blood Parrots.

I currently did one water change 10% a week for years on my 46 gallon well filtered tank ( cleaned gravel with it)

Now My husband has told me that I should do water changes once or twice a month at most. Like some others who have answered my other posts the do water changes weekly.

Now it depends on your filter and how stocked you are.

I am leaning towards once a week out of the sump which would be about 12% or so and higher if needed.

Thoughts? I will share this information. I know bigger is better however clean water is great.

Next, I just added my fish with tank cycled testing daily. Water has been in almost a week I have not done any changes. Do I wait until needed. They are just adjusting. I will do one within the week for sure or if their is reason.

Thanks,Tamara

well we need more info!!

Tank size
filtration
tank inhabitants

but no mater your filtration and stocking I would say minimum 30% weekly I do 40-50% weekly and my tank is over filtered...65g tank with over 150g worth of filtration and tons of turn over.

It really depends on how much you feed and how high your temp is (higher temp, the more food the fish will eat). Bigger fish= more waste=more water changes.

If you have just 2 parrots and depending how big----I would do weekly 15%, then every month or so go for a 40-50%.

Yes! It does depend on how much you feed and stock. The temperature is 82 degrees. I feed lightly by hand twice a day so there is minimal waste. My fish are 8 and 10 inches. I have the sump with the overflow of 29 gallons. I like the idea of changing sump water once a week then a bigger change with the entire tank once a month. I would add one more fish however do not want a heavy load.

I am new to the sump and the larger tank I thought would need less changing I am all for water changing it is a disagreement at my house. I always did 10% weekly on 46 gallon and slightly more once a a month with a bio wheel filter system. I would like to add plants if they help and if they can float or be in a pot as my fish will play with them.

Thanks for the help!

I do 50% water change weekly and vacumm gravel bi-weekly but my tank is stocked heavy.

@ Tanker. That is my thought on the water as I believe in fresh water.

I was hoping for two week changes however one week smaller is easier and so quick once you have a system.

If you have just those two blood parrots in a 90 gallon tank, there is absolutely no reason why you could not go 2 weeks between changes.

I do weekly water changes on most of tanks but they are lot more heavily stocked percentage wise. I have some tanks that can go 2 weeks no problem.

How often do you test your water? If there is not a huge rise in nitrates from the 1st week to the second, then it's a waste of water to change it weekly. Of course everyone is going to have their own opinion and I have even read posts from people who do 50% water changes TWICE A WEEK.

Many people who have nitrate reactors that can keep their nitrates at 5 and lower, only do monthly water changes.

So what will work best for you may be different that what works best for tanks owned by someone else.

Do you monitor your nitrates daily or weekly?

@Rastoma. Thanks. That is what I thought as I am careful with feeding. I am currently measuring twice a day the ammonia, ph, nitrites and nitrates.

I will continue to do so until established then go test a couple times a week.

What testing kit do you use? I have API and would like to try another.

Thanks for your helpful response.
