Depressed fish

There are also studies that show hormones used for birth control are making it into the waterways and impacting reproduction in fish and amphibians.

Hooray for short sighted human tampering!

I'm a huge fan of the idea of mandatory birth control in water/food supply, but I've long since (1990 or so) been concerned about its impact on the waterways and the regulations for contraceptive/antidotes. Wow. That made me feel old.

It's one of those situations where habitat biologists are struggling to identify what is negatively impacting populations, both in diversity and healthy. Contaminants in the water is a big one, but so are invasive species, changes in habitat, shrinking ranges, migration routes being interrupted, and disease. This world will go on, but there are a lot of things that will change in the coming decades and centuries. We can't say where things will go because there are just too many variables--those we know about and those we haven't thought about.

Yep. That's what my concern was: the variables we just haven't identified yet. I was smart enough to see that back then, but not smart enough (or motivated enough, for that matter) to try to find viable solutions.

..no wonder fish jump so often. Try putting some prozac in the water.

So could i get my bloodfins to breed like crazy if i put viagra in the tank?;)
