hello fellow fish lovers! been a while...i've got a (probably goofy) question. last summer, i released 25 small(2-3") goldfish and 5 small (3-4") koi in the new pond, and now there's tons of fish in there. initially i thought the babies were a bunch of gf, but now some of them are looking more koi-like. is it possible the koi have bred as well? some of the youngsters are longer, bigger overall, and have that koi-shaped mouth. also, some of the colors i'm seeing look very kohaku-like. hmmmm... just curious if anyone had any insight, because i'm not very good at being patient ;) and would prefer to know now than wait it out. oh, and btw, catching any specimens for up-close inspection is not going to be an option. the pond is heavily planted, mud bottom, and quite full at the moment due to all the rain, so i don't really want to get in it. thanks in advance.

Koi aren't going to start breeding until they're 2-3 years old, and closer to a foot in size, I believe. Goldfish mature faster, so it's more likely they're parents.

not to revive a dead topic, but neither size seem large enough to be spawning yet. they could also be baby koi from eggs that were attached to your new plants; it's been a month, what do they look like now?

My koi bred the first spring after winter in the pond, they were around 6in. So a year after they were put into the pond, they bred.
Who knows how old the fish are unless you got them from a breeder who kept track. Could be koi babies, catch a few and look for the bars on the mouths.
To catch them, lower a net, toss in some floating food and then lift the net when they swim in to eat.
