These are the best pictures I could get. Hopefully the angles are ok, let me know if you'd need a shot from a different angle I can try to get it tomorrow. Each picture is of a different fish. I'm having trouble picking out the telltales that I've read to watch for on regular finned GBR's. For example the red belly doesn't really seem to show at all, just some red on the fins.

Hopefully they work this time, I uploaded them from my computer instead of my ipad. I've had these fish for about 3-4 months.

#1 Male #2 Female #3 Male. The extended fin rays (and lack thereof) on the dorsal is the giveaway.

Could you explain what you mean by that? I don't see much of a difference between #2 and #3's dorsal fin except the black stripe. #1's looks a little taller in the front but it is also leaning back in the picture.

The very fact that it CAN lean back like that and still be a bit taller means it's a male. If it wasn't leaning back like that it would be standing noticeably higher.

i just looked at my pair of GBR's, and i just want to confirm thats a good way to tell about the sex. my male has way higher dorsal thing goin on. but btw...whats up with the chopped up fins?

Ok thanks. I just watched another YouTube video that referenced forehead shape as well and everything seems to match up.

I'm not sure what chopped up fins you're referring to? They all look fine to me. Maybe because they are long finned you're noticing the bits that stick out further?

yea, forehead shape is another good way. the second pic makes that even more obvious. the fins i was talking about were the tail fins on the first and second picture. it could be just the way they are posing thugh.

It could be the way they are posing. The fish in the first and second pictures have, since I purchased them, had much more exaggerated long fins. The third looks much closer to the regular finned version. I believe the tail fins are just longer in some sections than others opposed to the smooth rounded look of the third fish.
