When it's out of water for 30 seconds. it will auto shut off.
I didn't personally try it, but that's what the instructions said.

I'd like to note that if you have a low flow of water, it would sometimes flash an "LF" (low flow) error.
This will not cause it to stop, but might make your fishes/turtles go blind from all the flashing (no, not really, but you know).

If there is no flow at all, it will stall flashing from red, blue to green.

Some people suggested using a air stone, but that wouldn't work too well if its being used horizontally.

Overall, I think it's a pretty good heater. It seems to be more accurate the the few I had got in the past.

That auto shut off feature is why you "can't" mount it horizontally. Place it low enough, and it'll never matter.
