How much water in a water change??

I agree absolutely with the above.

However, make sure if you are using tap water that you do not have both Chlorimines & Chlorides... Chlorides will evaporate (aging water for 24 hours ensures this), but Chloromines do not evaporate, or if they do it takes a very long time.

You local water works department can readily tell you.

Welcome to AC! ;)

Just to make a little correction it is chlorine not "chlorides" and chloramine. Just a typo I'm sure. :) Didn't want anybody to walk off trying to research for "chlorides" and get the wrong idea.

I do a 10% water change on mondays and a 30% change on fridays. The friday cleaning is more of a deep cleaning and possibly pruning of any plants, if necessary, while the monday cleanings is just a "quickie" cleaning.

Many thanks to Jess, J double R and Coler for your timely and kindly help. Also thanks for not being as contemptuous to a newbie as another forum-site which shall remain unnamed (wikwink)

Now I shall go and begin the aging of the water.

Latah

i do weekly 50% water changes. the more water you change the better. 10-25% should be ok.

as for the aging of the water pick your self up a bottle of prime works great and very fast. no need to wait.

Now what's wrong with Chlorides, as in sodium chloride (ie. salt)!?! :D

Yeah, definately meant "Chlorines"! Thanks for the correction Sammie! ;)

I normally change as much as the time it takes me to do a clean of the gravel.
Usually about 40% in my 20 gallon and perhaps only about 25% in my 55 Gallon.

I just do 1-2 gals every day in my 20. some days i skip, i dont no why i do 1-2gals every day. Its time i give my take a vac. guess ill do that this weeknd.

I was told differently I have a 36g,5g,2.5g and a 3g was told to do a water change every month I take out approx 25-30% of the water. When I first started out in this hobby with my 5g I was changing water and gravel vaccuming every week but I was stressing my fish out plus I was told that you are taking out alot of the nitrifying bacteria if you change out water every week. My fish seem to be doing fine on this schedule water parameters are perfect in each tank. I also got my answer on changing the sponge filter. I have 2 whisper filters I only change out the carbon every month I rinse the sponge in old tank water and put it back into the filter container I was told to only replace the sponge when it is raggedy or falling apart. My other tanks have filters that have carbon in them already and I have a biowheel on each of those filters so the bacteria is contained there so I was told to just change out those filters monthly. If you are cycling the tank then water changes are a must more often depending upon your water parameters ofcourse. Hope this helps.

Couldn't agree with this for a well stocked tank

Nope, as Nick says the bacteria mostly reside on surfaces in the tank including the filter. I could see however that a vigorous gravel vac in a 5g with one betta every week could harm the biological filter. As regards stress, was it the water changes or the cycling process that stressed them ? I don't know if you cycled with fish in or not.

You can't test for some things; these build up in the water (dissolved organic compounds etc ?) and are not good for fish. It's not just about nitrates. Glad your fish are doing well of course :)

all of the above is obviously just my opinion.

Good points coler.
