Hi everybody,

Fishtankfishy from Sweden greeting all phurrum members from rainy west region.

A bit in a soup and need all possible help.

Got a new tank 60*30*30 (60 like, 20 Galons for US folks.)
Read up extensively on net and set up tank.

pH 8.0
kH 5.0

Did not do ammonia test.

After 1 week or so, got 4 fishes this monday (2 days back) (2 platys and 2 dalmetian mollys male/female pairs).

Yesterday night, found one female molly lying upside down. Not dead but no way active.

What is going on?
Tried googling and common cause might be VERY dangerous high ammonia levels. Have to buy a test kit today later in evening and perhaps shall do water change too.

Also heard from local pet shop that i must add non iodine salt to water.
If so, how much??

Sorry for nagging from day one and intro post itself.

The upside down molly made me so sad. :(

I have peat moss in a filter bag under gravel for lowering pH as I thought 8.0 is way too high. It seems to remain constant. Is there any other decent way to deal with pH? read all about C02 DIY systems etc.Not sure as beginer shall play with such stuff.

ANy input, mini/micro/macro suggestion, tips, nuggets of wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Forever yours,
Confused fishtank from sweden. :(

Hello! It sounds as if your tank is not cycled yet (you can read the post in my signature about cycling). The main theory behind it is that beneficial bacteria grows on the surfaces of your tank (not in your water) and this bacteria turns fish waste (ammonia) into nitrite, then to nitrate. Both ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic to fish. Right now i would suggest that you do a 50% water change. Pick up that ammonia test kit. and keep doing water changes to keep the ammonia below .025ppm. Use water conditioner ( i recommend Prime by Seachem) to help with the ammonia and remove contaminants from your water.

welcome to our forum and good luck!

Hi coach_Z
Thanks for the quick reply and shall read it up and do as as you suggested.

Is pH 8.0 ok or shall I try to play around with it(don't have much expertise not will to play chemically with live fishes in tank).

Hope I can find ammonia test in local pet shop. If not, at least shall change water and try to move the upside down molly into other makeshift tank.

Tusen tack(Thousand thanks in local language ;) )

I absolutely agree with Coach Z!!! Welcome to the forum!!!!

welcome to the forum, coach Z is correct. Sometimes you just get bad stock, and theres nothing to do about it.

Thanks folks. Appreciate it. Upside down molly made me really sad. Just want to have healthy nice fishtank not a ammonia gas chamber for my little friends. :(

Here is the quick update. Tried to get ammonia test and to my mild surprise, no one around here stocks it. All they have is ph, kh, gh, n02, no3 tests. So need to order from amazon and it shall take few days.

Soon will do the 50% water change.

Dwellers condition: The female molly is still alive and i shifted her to a makeshift place and she is still on bottom. There is some sort of fungus on her upper part of body but she is still breathing. Kept some food in there for her but don't know what to do with her.

Other 2 dudes (platy + dalmetian male) and platy dudette seems to be doing fine and hog food as if released from hunger stricken zone. :) More soon may be with pictures if I could get some decent ones.

Till then sayonara.

* There is a fine line between fishing and standing on a shore like an idiot holding the fishing rod.

I understand where your coming from, I lost a few fish in the beginning before I realized about the cycling process. Get some zebra danios if you want to have fish from the get-go. These guys seriously survive anything. Welcome to AC and if you have any more questions feel free to ask. As they always love to say here, the only bad question is the one that isn't asked!
