I just got back from an extended trip over the weekend; for the plane flight, I picked up the October issue of Freshwater and Marine Aquarium. The issue included a product review of Eco Bio Block, a grey cylindrical brick that introduces grass bacillus growth into the aquarium:

It was a very complimentary review, and after a bit of additional research I did purchase one block to try in each of my tanks. While the product is touted to be a substitute for water changes, I have no intention of changing my twice-weekly routine. I also have no problems with cloudy water; I am more interested in the ancillary benefits associated reported for fish coloration, activity, etc.

When the product arrives, I'll post updates with my own review and the tanks' progression.

Thanks... I know these are controversial primarily due to its billing as a substitute to water changes. However, as mentioned, I'm looking for the other benefits.

So far, the company has been easy to deal with. They also upgraded to priority shipping at no additional charge. The blocks themselves aren't cheap, but I'm willing to try this if it means enhanced aquarium stability.

The blocks are to be soaked for 24 hrs. in chlorine free water for 24 hrs. upon arrival and then placed in an area with water movement. I'm going to place each by the airstones in the tanks.

The Blocks arrived today Priority Mail and were packaged very well... nothing haphazard about the outfit thus far.

Per instructions, I rinsed the blocks (hollow donuts ~3 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide) in RO and have them soaking overnight. The instructions include dumping the soak water into the tanks. The suggestion is to repeat this cycle 2-3 times before placing in the tank for best effect. Grass bacillus is aerobic, so placment near the airstones should be sufficient.

Details of the 90 day money-back gurarantee also appear straightforward. Apparently, some see observable results in as little as a few days; others rewuire the full 4-6 weeks.

Updates to follow.

hmmm, it looks really cool. this strain of bacteria though, i wonder if it will have any impact upon the bacterium already living in the tank?

Welcome to the thread galen... based on the research I've done, the reviews, and the info. from the website, this strain of grass bacillus is not expected to have any impact on the nitrifying bacteria in the filter. It is also tested to have safety for all fish and to have no pathogenicity for humans.

In fact, you can break the stone up and place it in the filter with no negative consequences. This is what I may wind up doing, because the blocks are not very attractive LOL.

Hey DrV, looks really intriguing. I'll be interested to see what you find out. Have you seen anything as to impact on inverts?
