Thank you you for the words of encouragement!

Fixing a poorly set up tank is a lot of work!

Tap water for the water change is treated with AmQuel (that's all I have) and coming up to temperature. I picked up on the tip not to use tempered water...

So the tank water tested as follows:
ph 6
Am .25 ppm
Nitrite 0 (woot!)
Nitrate 40 ppm (so not woot)

Out of curiosity I tested the treated tap water:
ph 7.6
Am .25
Nitrite .25
Nitrate 0

So the water going in is a little better than what's in there. I may dose the rest of the tank with the AmQuel.

The whisper filter has an established filter pad. I wondered about removing it and cutting a section out of the bag. Take that section and add it into the Fluval somewhere to help the bacteria get a head start. Clean the rest of the charcoal out of the whisper filter and clip it to the side of the tank in the water?

Keep at it, you will get there! IMO, if nitrite is that high, I would WC now....
