OK, my great new tank has an issue. There is a heavy plastic rim around the top of the tank, but this also has an extension into the tank (the cover rests on it). The problem is that it is so thick, the Aquaclear intake tube can't get past it.

So do you think it's safe to cut a 1 inch section of this extension out?

Oops, I'll actually have to cut a section about 8 inches long for the entire filter. Crud.

In this picture, the cross bar is attached to the rim extension. I don't want to cut the rim, just enough of the extension to get the intake into the take.

yep.. dont modify the tank for a filter, modify the filter for the tank or get a new filter.. which will cost more to replace if it breaks? :)

Go with a canister, IMO.

It would probably be ok because it is the center cross pieces that are the ones that are needed to stop the glass from bowing. This said, I would opt for a canister filter as stated and not change the tank.
