I'm 19 years old, I'm an IT professional for state education, so I work with a bunch of 30, 40, 50, and 60 year old retired teachers, 90% women (but I do work with Miss Arkansas, but we wont get into that!). All of them have plants and pictures of their kids / husband and more boring crap. My desk is very bare at work, so I've decided to spruce it up a bit. I've decided to build a nano for a mantis shrimp and polyp.

Since I want to keep things as small and compact as possible but still achieve my goal. I have adopted a "false back" type of tank that will be made entirely of acrylic. The back will be black acrylic the rest clear. I wanted to start cutting this weekend but I didn't get around to it because I was still deciding how to design this.

Tank dimensions:
10" tall
15" wide
15" long - 3" false back

Anyway, here's what I came up with:

I'm still working on a canopy, I'll make a custom fixture for two 18watt 9" 50/50 compact fluorescent straight pin bulbs. Also a 40mm 12 volt fan for cooling.

About the only part I'm stuck on is a cleaning crew, so I'm open to suggestions.:help:

I'll probably continue to post information here as far as the build goes, so stay tuned!

Also, I'm open for suggestions / design ideas.

Mantis-Mallet lol. Maybe LR rubble in the back instead of media?

just wondering but have u seen nano cubes, aquapods, or he red sea nano aquariums, they are basically ur design...but i bet urs will cost less since its DIY. looks good lol i like the drawings.

Yeah I have seen them at the LFS, and adding everything up it's about the same price. But the "I did this and it looks great" factor is priceless! :D

The bio balls will offer needed mechical filtration and biological filtration that can easily be rinsed / removed / replaced if needed. I will have live rock in the tank though as well as live sand.

flase bio balls are useless...they become nitrate factories unless cleaned in fresh salt water weekly in most cases...rubble is the best choice plus it will provide much needed micro fauna.

I dont see why you couldnt just have a regular nano tank filtered by a sponge filter and live rock. A false back filter just adds a lot of necessary work.

Since you plan on building it from scratch, i highly recommened buying acrylic from http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=334&PHPSESSID=200707041058191627740865. My fiancee has built 20+ nano tanks and she always buys from there and always had great service. They even do free precision cuts for you
