Here's a puzzler. I got a batch of plants from Arizona Aquatic Gardens a few months ago. A few species of crypts, vallisneria, rotala, apon ulvaceous, dwarf onion, giant hygro, and a few others. It went into a 25 tall tank with laterite mix below coarse sand, 55W CF lighting, DIY CO2, and in which I am giving trace, MgSO4, and KCl. pH is about 6.6-6.8, KH=4.0.
Here's the thing, all the plants are doing very well, giving lots of new growth. Except the giant hygro. It looked fine when I planted it, the leaves looked great, but the stems turned to mush within a week or two. But they were also making adventitioius roots, and the few survivors are doing well. Any ideas why they died?

Sometimes this happens with stem plants. I would suggest cutting them up where the stems are still ok and replanting that portion. That should help.

Stem plants can get funky like that if it's cloudy outside....seriously I wouldn't worry about it. For a variety of reasons my stem plants need to be completely uprooted and the bottoms chopped and then the tops replanted. Usually the culprit is lack of light getting to the bottom stems. Mine stay healthier looking when I do that. Basically it's pruning from the bottom.
