I was always under the impression that the two types of cichlids could not be mixed, due to water conditions and the ph thing. I run my african cichlid tank on the lower end of the ph scale for africans and they are all fine and healthy. I was doing some reading on americans lately, and most require a ph between 6.5 and 8. Some american cichlids seem to require a bit more "meaty" foods in their diet, but besides that, the diets do not seem a whole lot different. So why is it so "taboo" to mix the two?

I have been wondering myself, MiramichiMob.
i'm still a newbie myself when it comes to cichlids. in addition to what u just said, their is some differnce in overall aggression and keeping their territory, though every fish is differnt. I myself have a mixed tank of South American and African. So far no real problems. But they are young still. Some people have had alittle sucess mixing some. I'm sure it depends alittle on which S.A. and which Africans along with tank size and hiding places.

Most africans are herbivores and americans are carnivores. Just like you dont feed lettuce to an oscar, you dont feed rosy reds to africans. Mixing them is just wrong. Its sorta like putting a school of arrowanas in with your school of tetras.
