Can some rock give off ammonia. i brought some rocks home work to put in my tank. well during the cycle after every water change say 50% or more to bring the ammonia level down, the next day the ammonia will return to the same level a little over 1ppm. cycle was close to 4 weeks old and no trace of nitrites. Thursday i use filter media from a cycle tank to complete my cycle i also remove the rocks that day. On Friday and Saturday ammonia reading were 0ppm and nitrates were between 20pmm and 30ppm very good so far. I add the rocks back in my tank because they were nice colorful rocks. i test the water again this mourning and ammonia level were around 1ppm. The exact same level as before the added filter media. So can some rocks give off ammonia? if so good or bad? and did it stop the nitrites from show during the cycle? I remove the rocks
and place then in a buck of water to test for ammonia i post reading tomorrow.

What is the ammonia reading on your tap water...?

no ammonia reading on tap water

rocks themselves can't produce ammonia... but if there was any dead organic matter (like dead little critters or dead plant debris) then it would produce ammonia as it rotted off.

did you clean the rocks before you put them in the tank?

yes the rock were we clean and soak in hot water
