I have set up my aqaurium using a live sand. I thought the cloudyness was due to me not rinsing the sand before adding it, but it is now almost 3 days and it is still very cloudy. The filter is working and I have not turned on the skimmer yet. How many days does a tank normally need before becoming clear?

How much sand did you use? When I first set up mine (60lbs in a 75) it took a good 24-36 hours before it was completely clear.

I used 60 lbs. I have taken out the filter and rinsed it twice also.

Heres a picture of the tank

Wow, I'm surprised also. My tank was filled with just regular sandy dirt and settled in 2 days. I'm talking mud. So whatever is clouding it may not be particulate.

The skimmer will take it out. My tank had a white cloudiness after adding the sand so I turned on the skimmer and 24hours later the tank was almost totally clear and the skimmer collection cup was full of white mud.

The smaller the particles are, the longer they will stay suspended. The skimmer will take those particles out quicker because they are lighter and will attach to foam easier. Just makes sense. Turn that skimmer on and let it work!

It's very doubtful a bacterial bloom has happened and caused the cloudiness in such a short time frame. It's particulate and will settle on it's own with time or turn the skimmer on and it will be skimmed out.

Thanks everyone. I am excited to see a nice clear tank too... I have no clue what to stock it with. I am working on figuring out the live rock portion now... uncured vrs cured, base versus live, and so on...

No I do not currently have a powerhead. I am thinking about going out and buying a powerhead, a second filter sponge, and a new air bubbler that has double valves today (one for the pump and one for the skimmer).

Do I need an air pump connected to the tube that shoots water out from the filter pump? I am thinking thats what the little black tube hanging off of the side with a valve is for.

Am I correct in saying a powerhead is just used to create oxygen and move h2o?
