Cleaning the water tubes for an Eheim Classic

The water tubes (in/out) in my Eheim have "stuff" in them. I believe the stuff is bacteria. Eventually they'll get to the point of really restricting waterflow. What's a good way to clean these out? Blow them out with an air compressor (outside of the tank obviously), try forcing water through them, etc...

At what point do I get concerned with this? I clean the water outlet tube, then one with the holes in it, each time I clean the filter.

Let's be honest, I'm not too keen on siphoning the filter by sucking on those nasty hoses. :eek3:
 
Awesome club purchase: Buret brushes (sm.) from Fisher Scientific. ~$3 ea., 12/order min, I think.
 
Bleach, interesting. I guess you just need to make sure that the tubes are really clean. I suppose tubing is only like $.75/foot at the hardware store. I could just do the rip/replace. I'll try the pipe cleaners first, then move on to the other suggestions.

I used pipe cleaners to get the lose stuff out of mine. Still left a bit though.
 
it's a little time consuming, but set them somewhere in a tub, hook them up to a continuous flow source, and go down the tubes, squeezing them thoroughly. That should dislodge enough gunk to get them clean.
 
fishing line + small dia nut + old rag or something = clean tubes

just run warm water through it, cut an old rag, tie the line around the rag, then to the nut. drop the nut through the tube, and pull it through a few times.
