OK guys, comments please. I've got this in Word, so just post comments. Give it a week or so and we'll see if a friendly mod will sticky it.
I can't believe I couldn't think of more terms and acronyms... old age creeping up on me.
AquariaCentral Mafia FAQ
Since I brought this game here, I figured I should write the requested FAQ. I’ll try to cover the basics of game play, general rules, and frequently asked questions.
The most important thing though: THIS IS A GAME!! As such, please understand that the game thread is slightly different from other AC threads and players will be accused of lying and being evil mafia scum. If you are easily offended, please think carefully before signing up to play.
There is a sticky in the General Chit Chat from Blueiz. **Mafia Games** Please Read. Basically, it says that if anyone gets too bent out of shape and upset, then the game will be pulled from AquariaCentral. That is our first and only warning.

1) What is Mafia?
In its basic form, mafia is simply a game about information. A small group of ‘bad guys’ knows who each other are. They are trying to eliminate a larger group of players who don’t know who anyone is. There are many variations and we’ve had some odd ones here.
Usually, the players who don’t know anything are the innocent townsfolk of ‘ACville’. The bad guys, numbering between one and about ¼ of the number of innocent townsfolk, know who each other are and try to influence the innocents.
2) How do I play?
Every week or two, there will be a sign-up thread in the GCC area. It will be posted by the new game moderator and will contain the rules specific to the game. Post in this thread saying that you would like to play.
It is highly suggested that read a mafia thread before playing, but it isn’t required.
Next, just before the game begins, you will receive a PM from the moderator telling you what your role in the game is. The PM will tell you if you have special powers to be used in the game and who, if any, your teammates are.
Soon after, the game thread will be posted (and is usually stickied (Thanks AC Mods)). One the “Game On” post is made by the moderator, you may begin posting.
In general (because some games have slightly different rules), the turns go like this:
1) Daytime – everyone in the town (game) votes to lynch someone. The lynch target is removed from the game and their role (good guy, bad guy, ect.) is revealed to all. To lynch someone, you must type in BOLD: I vote to lynch PlayerX.
2) Nighttime – this is when the bad guys and other special roles do their thing. Players with special powers PM the moderator to use their abilities and the bad guys generally eliminate a non-bad guy player.
The game is over (again, generally speaking) when the mafia outnumber the townsfolk, or the townsfolk eliminate all the mafia.
3) General Terms and Roles
Lynch
–When the whole town votes to eliminate a player from the game.
Mafia
–The ‘bad guys’ of the game, though they may be werewolves, vampires, zombies, or CIA
Townie
– the ‘good guys’ of the game
Vote
– the declare you want to remove a player from the game
Hit
- the bad guy version of the lynch, this happens only at night
Doc (or Doctor)
- a player whose special ability is to prevent mafia hits. The doctor usually picks a player to protect and if the mafia attempt to hit that player, there is no result. The doctor doesn’t know who is innocent or mafia though.
Det (or Detective)
- a player whose special ability is to investigate the role of players. Each turn, the detective PMs the moderator a players name. At the end of the night, the mod replies with that players role (depending on special rules of the game)
4) Common Acronyms
UD – Untimely Death – someone who doesn’t or forgets to vote and is removed from the game
PR - Power Role – one of the players with special abilities
5) Mafia Etiquette
It is bad form to say that you will play and then never play. It’s just a game, but it does take some time.
Calling names or insulting players is BAD. Don’t do it. Please call them liars in a polite and respectful fashion. Yes, it can be done.
You will be grilled about every little thing you post. Be prepared for it and accept it as the price of living in ACVille.
Do not post if you have been eliminated from the game! It is generally considered OK to make one final post with ‘Boo’ or the tongue sticking out smiley. It is NOT OK to post any relevant information on the game. Also, do not post about the game in another thread. Once, the game is over, you can come back and berate the doctor for not protecting you… in a respectful fashion.
If you are going to be away for an extended period, let the mod and the players know. It’s OK (provided you don’t UD).
