What Substrate is better for my plants and my needs?

I have Natural Fluorite now, it does not work well for me while trying to move my plants around and my Vallisneria keep throwing off runners and the substrate is not covering them very well because of the size and texture, especially when trimming them off and trying to replant them..

What I'm looking for is something that will be beneficial to my plants and myself.

Will Fluorite Black Sand be good for growing plants and easy to hold down the plants I will be stocking?

Will Eco-Complete be good for growing plants and easy to hold down the plants I will be stocking?

Which substrate would work best for me and more importantly grow my plants better?

I have no idea about these substrates since i have not worked with them, but some of you might know the benefits of each type of substrate more than I do.

The Aqua soil Amazon sounds good, but you have to change the soil after a year or so... Not for me. :silly:
I need something that will last atleast 5+years if posible

Aquasiol you really don't need to change every year i've heard of tanks running for %+ years with it.

i understand you gripe with fluorite i actually just recently switched to flourite black tank and must say it is nice. easy to plant in and things don't come up as much as some other substrates i've used. you do need to wash it really well and probably let it dry out before adding it to you tank but it's worth it.

can't comment on the Eco because i only got a bad back of it last time i used it and haven't really used it since by it's self. i have had it mixed in with fluorite but thats about it.

so your just having problems replanting them? how large are you letting them get before removing them?
3 to 4 small leaves with root system. When planting 20+ close together, the size and shape of the Fluorite makes it difficult.
I'm buying something different and would like to know what would work better for both benefits of growing and planting. The substrate is $30+ per bag, so I would like to get the best stuff that will work best for me the first time.

Also, since the substrate is shaped like scales, it lifts to easy when pouring in water since the water movement creates a lift under the substrate pieces and the Fluorite goes flying and so do my plants, even at the other end of the tank very slowly pouring in the water...

You could always add a good layer of Eco on top of the Flourite.
Flourite by itself does take some technique to plant in IME.

I have an 80 gal with a mix of Eco, Red Flourite and a very fine Inert gravel by Carib-Sea called Peace River.
