Hey all,

thought i might introduce myself, even tho i've already started a thread or two.

I've been scuba diving for the past 15 years or so, and i've always been fascinated by marine life. Just about 4 or 5 months ago, i decided to take the plunge and start a marine tank. yes, its my first attempt at an aquarium. most people think its a newbie thing to go straight to a marine tank before learning the baby steps in a tropical. I've always thought marines are alot more interesting and i needed the challenge.

I did about 3 months of research and have finally put together a pretty decent setup (imho). Im quite patient, and did everything by the book and it DID pay off. Although my tank has matured nicely and have introduced 2 nice common clowns, its still a young tank (4 months).

My current water parameters are:

SG: 1.022
PH: 8.2
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5 mg/L
Ca: 500mg/l
temp: 27c

not bad for a first timer i think.

anyway, every couple of weeks, i would get a bloom of diatoms would my 4 turbos would clear up off the glass. but about 4 or 5 days ago, i started getting green algae on the front and back of the tank. a few "plants" started growing on the glass (about 1 or 2 inches long), which i kept removing. however, im really struggling getting the algae off. any ideas?

anyway, here are a few shots of my tank

Your tank looks great!

Just a quick question not related to your questions - are you filling the tank to that level on purpose or is water evaporating to that level? If it's evaporating then your SG is lower when your tank water level is full & it's not good for your habitants to have constant SG changes, as your salinity is increasing as water evaporates.

It just sounds like you still have the new tank syndrome, going through the different phases of cycling and establishing - just like I did. I'm less than a month into this myself, but I've already battled the diatoms from Phosphates and beat with RO/DI water, hair algae with more water changes & a very hungry Yellow Tang.

I would assume you are having a hair algae issue, and it's not out of the norm - but you should try eliminating all phosphates - you can buy a phosphates test and test from your water source, as you may test your tank & see no phosphates but you are still growing hair algae, as the HA will consume the phosphates before they can be detected in some cases. But algae showing up on your glass is common, some people leave it and others clean their tanks daily. I like to scrub daily and I've found the longer you leave stuff on the glass, the harder it will become to remove.

I left the water level like that on purpose. otherwise, the level would be too close to the lights. still need to change the lights...posted a new thread in the equipment DIY section. yes...there is evaporation, but i do a top up every 4 or 5 days or so. I marked a max/min level on the side of the tank to indicate the level of evaporation

tanks size. 120cm x 50cm x 40cm

i cant find a phosphate test kit...everyone seems to have run out! LFS is getting a new shipment on monday. will check again. hope the phosphates are too problematic.

thanks for the comments guys/gals

Looking good so far!

If you're having a difficult time getting some of the algae off the glass, an old credit card works pretty well. I think that it actually works better than some of the manufactured algae scrapers.
