This is as close to anything DIY I can get...

Empty tank.

Some washed fluorite. I found out that no matter what the bag says, WASH!

Now here's the "project" part. I purchased some of these cosmetic containers and siliconed them to the bottom.

And filled them with the fluorite!

Should look cool. I'm glad you found a way to separate the two substrates. Keep the updates coming!
 
Thanks jb! I randomly stumbled on the website after searching for hours trying to find something.

krytan: Approximately 2"...I wish they were taller but none of the plants have much of the root sytem so I'm hoping that is not a problem. I actually was planning crypts but skipped because of the lack of depth.
