First, I blame this all on mgamer. He had he exact "nano tree" I've been picturing in my head or this tank. :silly:

I have a 5 gallon hex, home to my DP, some pygmy cories, and some otos. It's my only non-planted tank, currently. It has some fake plants and one of the greek temple decorations. Lately the fake plants have started looking dingy, and the decoration makes the tank really hard to clean. I was thinking of going planted anyway.

So I think I'll be starting from scratch. I have white gravel, not sure what I'm going to do. I have black in one tank, natural in the other,. But the white is showing algae way too easily (I keep the lights on for algae for the otos).

I have the nano tree, a moss ball (one in every tank ;) ) and some giant hyrgo coming, for now. Need something tall. I have some plants from other tanks I can move around. I'd like this be a low-ish maintenance tank.

So, just throwin this out there, hopefully I'll have pics soon. :) any ideas on substrate? I've never done sand before, but i think I'd have to buy a lot at a time, right? Might be a waste for a 5 gallon, expecially a hex.

i say white silica sand or pool filter sand. in fact, any sand really. i have playsand and i think it looks good.

How much did you have to buy though? Don't you usually have to buy huge bags?

It comes in a large bag but can you store the rest for future tanks? ;)

Yah, you can just store the rest, and even though it's a big bag it's still pretty cheap. Pool Filter Sand would be great.
