any pics of your planted HOB? curious. can you use any plant or must be pothos? also what do you use for lighting? also, any debris it picks up gets flushed back into the tank or do you use filter floss/sponge?
thks, sounds like a great idea I may want to implement."

Here you go, my HOB nitrate filters on my 6 tanks and they really do work if you hang them give them light and give them time to grow:

looking good gunner, where you been?

that is a very fine idea nice looking

do the roots try to get in the impeller at all

edit:impressive display on the shelf there, how long did you serve for

as well will be keeping your wife and you in our thoughts and prayers

For some reason as much as the roots grow in and through the sponges on the AC HOB's and throughout the Penguin and AquaTech cartridges, they stay clear of the impeller never causing a problem. Probubly because they is no food down there and the roots seem to infiltrate the dirtiest part of the cartridge and sponge which also never get clogged. Its as if whatever debris gets in the filter gets removed. I do have to make sure the plat stocks are supported to the wall otherwise they become too top heavy and the stock will pull its out root out and then without water it will die.

Other then that they are pretty self sufficient and low maintenance requiring very little light to grow, a distant window or a 20W florescent bulb is how these have grown and continue to thrive. But without the moving nutrients in the aquarium water i.e lake a water vase, they would quickly turn yellow and die.

Thanks for the well wishes. One person who deserves allot of credit for watching my home, feeding my cats and keeping up my yard is Harold my neighbor. Harold is the one who helped me build my 244 tank. Also my other neighbors who have kept a good eye on things. Amazingly with only monthly water changes and only weekend feedings (2 days out of 5), my fish are doing amazingly well. Maybe the 2 day 8 feedings followed by the 5 day fast does them and the tank good , more like in nature perhaps where there is feast and fast.
