hello all =)

i'm looking for large quantities of cheap aquatic plants to feed to my turtle scooter. he loves anacharis and frogbit, but he'll eat anything that isn't nailed down (i've even seen him try to bite off a mouthful of plastic plant before lol) i'd prefer plants that didn't have lots of fragile roots or other bits that break off easily cuz it just makes a mess... tried water lettuce once and my filter intake was choked with roots within minutes >_< i've seen him clear the surface of a 30 gallon tank of frogbit in two or three days, so i really need a lot of plants to make it worth the trouble, and the shipping ;)

so, please let me know what you've got, and if you know you're having to get rid of a bunch of it on a regular basis, i know a teenaged turtle who'd be happy to take regular shipments for you :grinyes:

thanks!

(oh, and hitch-hikers are ok- he'll probably just eat them anyway lol)

bump! turtle hungry! tired of pellets!

I have lots of Salvinia rotundifolia, aka butterfly fern:

This grows like a best. I bet that Parcel Post would not take that long since you are in Virginia, but if you'd rather have Priority then it would be $10 for a $5 box stuffed full. There might be cheaper shipping options though, such as First Class Mail package. I always seem to be an ounce or two over the magic number though ;)

Do you care if duckweed is mixed in? I have it both ways.

Incidentally, I would recommend leaving a small amount in another tank to multiply on its own - it reproduces even faster than frogbit, though not as fast as duckweed!

hmm, i've never heard of that one....
no, i don't mind a bit of duckweed... i've gotten it for him before and just like for the rest of us, it's hard for him to get rid of it all....there's always a couple stubborn little ones hiding in the filter lol lmao
i do always put some of any plant i buy into my fishtank for safekeeping, but sometimes the snails undermine that effort, or it doesn't grow fast enough to keep up with his tummy lol
if you could give me an idea of what our cheapest shipping looks like, i'll let you know =)

bump... still looking for foods

Here's an idea, I dont know if it could be planted in the tank, but dandelion greens and the flower heads. THEY LOVE THEM! I know it wouldnt be much help during the winter, but its something that would be readily available in the area. Some stores also sell just the greens in a bundle for about $2.00. I fed them to my 6 foot long iguana (when I didnt take him outside on his leash and harness to graze) and my turtles in the past.
