Feeding otos?

I waited to add otos to my tank until I thought there was a decent amount of algae, and they completely wiped it out. So what do I feed them now? I've been adding bits of algae wafer, but one of my corys really likes eating the algae wafers, so a lot of the time, he ends up eating it. So how do I feed my otos? Do I extend my photo period to try to cultivate algae? Just keep adding algae wafers? They tend to be slow eaters from what I've seen (at least slow at getting to the food).

They will eat algae wafers but seem to prefer kens vegetable sticks. They will also eat Xtreme foods micropellets and sometimes blanched vegetables. Zucchini seems to be the preference in my tanks. You could sink a postage stamp size at lights out to give them a better chance.

Another option is to cultivate algae on river rocks in a vase in yoru window sill then rotate them in and out of the tank.

Also, run your finger along the inside glass of the tank. If there is still a "slimy" feel to it, its likely there is enough infusoria in the tank for them to graze. If its squeaky, you need to get them supplementation sooner rather than later.

Definately look to suppliment with Ken's Veggie Flakes and Sticks and blanched zucchini.

If your tank is nicely planted, spear the zuc with a bamboo skewer (or similar) and place it in the substrate next to the plants where the Oto's like to hang out.

I have never had luck with algea wafers. I give mine a slice of zucchini/cucumber (whatever I have at the moment) ever 2 days.

There's a catch with algae wafers. They will most likely turn their noses up on the ones that contain fish or shrimp meal. Use the "true" algae wafers.

To get them to eat it, blanch a piece of zucchini and let it sink to the bottom. Then, place the wafer right in the middle of it after it sinks.

Another factor with this of course will be any other occupants you have in the tank that might like to much the wafer as well. ;o)

Is there any way to save zucchini slices? Can I slice it all, and freeze the slices? And then thaw and blanch as needed?

you can.

When I grow zucchini in the summer, I slice it into wedges and drop it in boiling water for about 20 seconds. Then spread it out to dry, then freeze it (getting as much air out of th ebaggie as possible). You dont' need to defrost it, just drop it in and it will sink and defrost in the tank water.
