So I've had enormous success turning 3 stems of sunset hygro a friend gave me when she moved into 3/4 of a 10g tank. However, I've yet to really succeed in getting much pink to come out. I like the colour contrast and I imagine that it's mainly a light intensity issue.

Does anyone know how to get the colour to come out?

iron and nitrates

Try adding a shot of Excel, dosing iron, or running a bit lean on nitrates. Those are more important than lighting, IMO.

Hey happy, I have some sunset that's too bright for me. I was hoping only the top leaves would be pink but most of the leaves are pink!
I have 6 normal output flourescent bulbs over my 90. I inject CO2. My nitrates are around 5ppm and the only iron I add is through 5ml of Flourish every other day. I've only been doing for a couple weeks so may have to up dosage in the future. Just thought I'd give you a little more info. I think you can see the sunset in my pics through the link in my sig.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies anona and beviking,

I'll try to keep the NO3 in the 33g at around 5 and see what happens. I don't have flourish, but I do have a trace element mix that I picked up from a local hydro shop. I imagine the end product is pretty similar, except that dosing will be a bit more of an art.

Well, I may have spoken too soon :o . Last night I trimmed my sunsets and noticed many of the lower leaves that were pink were wilting and new greener leaves were growing from the same node. I've only had these plants a month so maybe they will replace the lower pink leaves with green ones (please oh please!)? I'm sure the nursery grows them so they look their best. I figured if they were going to lose the pink lower leaves, it would have happened by now. I guess I'm one step farther away from being a newbie now!:D
