Does the heater have to be vertical in a tank?

I always mount my heater near either the input our the output of my filter. It helps keep the water moving near the heater and prevents hotspots near the heater.

I have two heaters in my tank. One at either end underneath the intakes of my filters mounted horizontally. Mine are both submersible.

How would I know if I have good water movement???
I have a fuval 404 for a 72 gal tank, the input is in a corner and the heater is right next to it. And the output of the filter is placed in the center. I am in the process of setting up so it can be changed...I have one 300 watt submersible heater. :)

I have mine horizontal about two inches off the botton beside the intake to my filter. I figure it circulates better this way. Warm water is sucked up the intake and dispersed. Warmer water rises up along the back of the tank into the flow of my HOB filter that helps disperse the warm water.
