I'm having trouble sexing my young ram. I got it along with another from my lfs the other day, but one died about a day after putting it in my tank. It hid almost all the time until I found it lying on the bottom of the tank :sad

Anyway, I need to find out what Gender the one I have left is so I can get it a partner. It seems to be very healthy and is not in the least bit shy. It swims around with all the other fish and when you go near the tank it comes over to see whats going on.

I have attached a couple of pics. I think it might be female, but I'm not 100% sure.

She didnt eat much the first couple of days she spent in my tank, but shes eating now. If you open the hood shes the first one up to the surface. I don't know how well they were doing at the lfs, as one of the ones I got died. I can't see any signs of stress or disease, and shes very active.

So would I be better getting a male or a male and another 1 or 2 females?

yah looks like a Female to me. I would ask some people that circulate the Cichlad threads. I know My friend Mooman would have better info for you. Maybve try to PM him if you really want an answer. I know he gave my boyfriend and I a pair that is Male and Female. Good lcuk

Yeah looks like a female to me as well, although she doesn't look all that developed. That'll come though.

As for buying rams with the intent on getting a pair... If they are not old enough to properly sex or have not formed pairs at the LFS then the advice I've most often been given is to buy 6 to 8 at one time with the ok to return the remaining to the LFS after a pair forms. You'll know when a pair forms, they'll clean surfaces together, chase everyone else away and you'll notice some of the other rams hiding up near the rear surface of the tank. Get them out when they do that or their days are numbered.

I think my lfs has a shipment coming in this week. I'll ask them to put 5 or 6 aside for me to make sure they're OK and take them with the intention of returning the singles.

Should I get 1 or 2 males?
