Take a look at this link. Check the eye spot at the base of the tail. If the eye spot goes all the way down its a false red terror aka mayan cichlid. If it stops halfway, thens its a festae, true red terror.

Well i think it is a festae.
it said true ones have a eye spot only about half of the tail,
and false ones run all the way down tail.

well its a little hard to see, still a bit scared (so colors and strips are a bit faded) but i think the spot is onle about half of the tail.

I'll get a pic up and let everyone else try to see also.

Fingers crossed!

that fish is not a festae?

it has a small eye spot. i thought false ones have a spot that runs all the way down the tail?

I'm going to call the Pet shop that i got it at tues. (there closed on mon.) and ask if it is a Festae red terror? or a Mayan red terror. Maybe if they got them from a hobbiest i can get ahold of them and ask.
Are the LFS out to trick you? or do they just not know?
Why not put "Red Terror - Festae" or "Red Terror - Mayan"
on the tanks?

Its kind of disapointing to find out i didn't get what i thought i bought.

Thanks for all the info so far!

ok, i have done some looking online for false Red Terror and True Red Terror.

After looking at alot of pictures, i think the spot isn't a good way of telling apart! i have seen eye spots on Mayan small (like half of tail)

I think you can tell by counting strips.
Not 100% but mayan (False Red Terrors) have 7 strips.
Festae (True Red Terrors) have 9 strips and there is a "Y-ish"
shaped one on the head.

please let me know what you think on this idea.

Bom dia

The festae have the Y on the head and female festae have the dorsal fin black or blue.

The spot in festae is small and round.

Everything that I have read about the festae says that if it has the y shape or sometimes a 4 then it is a true red terror. I believe that is what I have because of that shape. Mine is about 5 inches right now. I will post a pic for you.
