Glasgow, Scotland.
I met up with a friend in town today for some shopping, and run into a girl she knew when she went to college.

She live's in town and invited us up to her house.
As soon as i walked into her livingroom i saw her fish tank :D

I didn't want to run over to the tank right away, so when she fixed us some drink's, i asked her what kind of fish she had, and she said Cichlid's, so i went over for a peek.

Apparently the tank had been running for over a year with all the current inhabitant's, which were mainly Malawi, but, she also had Tanganyikan Cichlid's in there, which were Calvus & Brichardi!!

I can't remember all the Malawi's she had but she definetly had some OB Zebra's, Kenyi and what looked like Lab's.

She said she has had NO problem's with the mix in the tank, and hasn't ever lost a fish.

What's your opinion on mixing these two Cichlid's?

A lot of people say it isnt good due to the different 'behaviors' of the two lakes, and one fish wont be able to recognize another's signals, etc etc. But, for many people its simply because they want to keep biotope tanks, and keep it natural by not mixing lakes. But IMO if you pick your species well then it can work out fine. It all depends on which fish, because they are all different.

I personally keep Tangynikan catfish in my Malawi tank with no problems. My boyfriend keeps a 90 gallon as follows: 2 S. petricola, 7 or so C. moorii, 2 C. azures, 2 P. phenoculus, 1 A. baenschi, 10 P. demasoni, 2 A. calvus, 6 or so N. brichardi, and 1 frontosa. I think thats it, i might be leaving some out. Anyways, this is a very new tank and we dont know if this mix will work. So far, it looks like the brichardi are kicking the demasoni's butts, but it could just be they are doing it to each other. This mix is NOT reccommend... ;)

But, it just goes to show that it can be done. I reccommend reading up on various lake tang and malawi species, and see which ones would be more compatible. :)

I have too say i do like the thought of mixing the two. Especially the A. Calvus, the white one's are really stunning, but, i love the black and yellow one's too.

Her tank, we'll her boyfriend's, looked lovely and she did say the Brichardi were the tank bullies!!

I think i'll do some research on how this would work and maybe give it a try.
