Reccomendation for a protein skimmer

Personally, I'd go with the Coralife Super Skimmer. They're inexpensive and they're monsters...LOTS of good reports about them.

I have the 225gal. model on my 200gal. tank, the 225gal. model on a 210gal. and the 65gal. model on my 25gal. reef tank.

They're DEFINATELY worth getting!

I too have a Coralife Super Skimmer and couldn't be happier with it. I have the 65g model on my 55g and it does a SUPER job. For the price I don't think you can do better.

I have also seen a lot of good reports about the EuroReef line and also the Won Brothers line.

I have a remora and I am starting to have some trouble with cyano. My LFS says that this one of my problems. Is anyone out there also or have had this problem. JUST what is the better skimmer???? The LFS say the coralife super skimmer.. :rant2:

I just got back from a closing sale at a LPS. I picked up a Sea Clone 100 Protein Skimmer for $100 CDN taxes included. It seems to be running nice. Has anyone ever used this one?

I have a CSS (Coralife Super Skimmer) 125 on a 55g and have it running really dry. I have pulled out more gunk within 24 hours than I ever did with my old built in skimmer on the wet/dry. The foam produced on my unit is so dry, it will barely run down the riser tube when it is dumped over the top. The foam is really dark in color and does have a nasty smell to it. The foam sometimes never reaches the bottom of the collection cup and will dry out on the riser tube and turns pitch black. Sometime it is pushed down by new foam coming out of the riser tube. I did close off the air inlet on the exhaust tube and it is submerged underwater. I have seen many post on other forums to indicate not to do this for it will produce backpressure and cause a erratic operation in the skimmer, but it works great for me and is totally quiet with rock solid foam production. No splash'n sounds and no microbubbles also since I closed off the air inlet. The skimmer itself is located inside the sump with the pump setting 2.67" below the water surface. Organic material (Protien) is lighter than water and will tend to float, so it collects at the surface more. The tank is in the family room and you can hardly hear the tank running, but it is working great removing waste. So far as mentioned, for the money I couldn't be happier with it. Try to go with the largest size available within you budget and space. I would have gone with the 220 size, but it was too tall as the 125 barely fits under the tank in the sump. Also, I don't have a heavy bioload also.

I have a Euroreef CS5-2 bought from Premium Aquatics for $220 and it sits in the sump. I have it set for kinda dry and it has pulled out a bunch of dark brown stinky sludge. It's amazing what can come out of visually clean water.
Before I got it I had a cyano problem which didn't seem to alter much with reduced feedings and lighting but within 24 hours after adding the skimmer it improved dramatically and was gone completely in 3 days.
I can't compare it to other skimmers but I find the Euroreef really easy to clean and adjust. Money well spent from my point of view.
