Hi, I have a new tank setup. It is a 20 gallon high, with a Penquin Bio-wheel filter, heater, and flourescent hood. It has been setup, and running for around 48 hours now. There are no fish or plants in it right now. I have decided to cycle with fish. I have been told,(and almost scolded), that fishless cycling is the way to go. Would cycling with fish really make me a bad person? Before fishless cycling was known about wasnt it the norm? I have always had a soft spot for cichlids, and I am leaning towards keeping some smaller types(dwarf). What cichlids that are suited for a 20 gallon tank would be best for the cycle? What cichlids will work well in that size tank? Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

There really aren't any fish that are suited to be poisoned. I realize this is a personal choice of yours, but likely it's going to be hit or miss on how well the fish do through the cycling period. If you insist on using fish, just get what you want to keep and make sure you do very frequent water changes throughout the cycling period. If you get something that is considered "hardy" you're going to be stuck with it when you're done cycling anyway...so you might as well tough it out and be prepared to lose a few.

IMO the reason people do fishless cycling is so that they dont kill any fish while cycling their tank, it really comes down to morals, i think they do the same quality job but it all comes down to your morals and how you feel about buying a fish that is fairly likely to die in your newly established tank.
