I am setting up a new tank.....a 33 gallon flat back hex, and I want to try to breed as well. My Idea for the Display is a tanganyikan biotope and getting a breeding pair Altolamprologus Calvus, my question is that I would like to have some other fish in the tank....maybe a shellie harom. I would have grow out tanks for the fry....

is this something that would work? or would I have to stick with only the calvus?

calvus become very agressive when spawning, depending on what type of calvus you get the tank maybe to small. i would suggest that maybe 2 clown loaches, and a pleco or something. i definately wouldn't put any other cichlids in there, remember they have large mouths aswell, and is suprising whta they can fit in.

I don't think you will ever get a 'breeding and display tank' to work very well. You will have to decide which you want. If the 'display' fish are too much for the breeders there will be no fry. If the 'breeders' get too nasty when breeding.... well you get the idea. Pick one or the other.
