I have a 45G tank with 5 Bala Sharks in it and I need some help. My tank has developed what looks to be black algae, everywhere. I had an Otto for about a month, but the stuff still was there. The otto recently died by being sucked into the water jet, but thats another story.

Anywho, what can I do to fix this problem. I am going to replace all plants and attempt a major cleaning tomorrow.

Other than cleaning and replacing, is there anything else I can do? any water additives I should use?

Last water change about 3 weeks ago. Been busy with work. :duh:

Test your phosphate levels. If you completely clean your tank, you WILL have to cycle it all over again. And in case you aren't, try filtering your tank with activated carbon in your biowheel. I had a tank with a problem similar to this. Once I changed the carbon, the stuff disappeared in a short amount of time.
But please dont tear down your tank.

Oh, and if the plants arent dead, just hand clean them with tap water. (No soap.)

seems I dont have a phosphate test :( I only have the Ammonia Quick Dip and Quick Dip Multi-Test both from Jungle.

I am planning on just getting new plants, clean the rock, and take off and try to clean the top layer of gravel.

I was thinking of getting live plants this time around and another Otto (Yes, I'll cap the jet). Should i get the live or wait till i clear up the algae?

Also... the Balas have been hanging out at the bottom rear of the tank for the last week. Is this related?

Vacuum the top layer of gravel. (Vacuuming all of it would be better though.) Live plants are nice if you can keep them sucessfully. (I never had any luck with them...) You can get the plants now, just put them in after the maintenance. As for the otto, waiting a while would be wise. And get more than one, they like to be kept in groups.

Thanks, this is what Ill do

- vaccuum all of the gravel
- try to clean the rock
- get all new plants (prolly fake, never had live)
- Scrub the tank with an algae sponge

Should I use any additives, algae "killers" like Algone, Algae Clear, or AlgaeFix?
