Well, they ARE carp. I know we were told as kids that you should only eat carp in the spring and not in the summer, cause they eat garbage off the bottom. Dunno if that's true or not.

I have a goldfish and a butterfly koi. They eat enuthing that is in the bottom of the tank, so your words seem to be true. However, I see no difference among spring and summer for the amount of garbage in the bottom of the lake/river.
 
Some people around here fish in the Maumee River for carp and eat them. They say you have to cut out the 'Mud Vein' while preparing them to be cooked.

I think we all know what the 'Mud' refers to!!
