Cool congrats! Ive been told that keeping discuss can be chalenging, the fact that u got them to pair means your keeping them happy well done. Im thinking of buying a young pair for my 120g ive never had them before are there any tips you can give me on keeping them healthy and also choosing the right fish from the LFS. also the spots on yours i see many like this im assuming its caused by dark backgrounds or substrate in captive breeds, did you buy yours this way? cuz the tank in the pic has no background or dark features (im assuming you maybe put them in a breeding tank ) ...
I have them in a bare bottom tank because it is easier to keep clean. Water quality is of the utmost importance with Discus. They are only truly happy if I do water changes at least every other day and preferably every day.
A couple good things to think about if you're looking to keep them. You want a place to hold and season change water. I use a 100 gallon stock tank with two 300W heaters and a mag-drive pump. I fill it with about 90% RO/DI water and 10% tap. I sink a lady's stocking filled with peat and aquarium gravel in front of the pump. Make sure the water is the same temperature as the tank water. I keep the temperature about 86 degrees F and some would say that it should be even higher than that. I have found that mine are the happiest at that temp. Frozen food is king, mysis, brine, and bloodworms seem to be their favorites. I have tried Jack Wattley's frozen discus food but they don't seem to care for it.
Best of luck if you decide to try them. I am having a lot of fun with mine so far.
Yeah, the male's color turned on like a light bulb. The female actually got a lot brighter too but she doesn't have as much red. Those little spots on her side became brighter.
