Ive been interested in breeding shrimp for sometime now and have had a few successful attempts at it, but only by chance in a very heavily planted commuinty tank. But my question is what is the best way to go about breeding shrimp? I have a 5.5 gal tank that is planted with some java moss and a few dwarf lilly plants with a small internal whisper filter. It was originally setup for a pair of killifish (but my male keeps killing females) so i thought i'd turn it into a breeding grount for shrimp. Presently there are 2 ghost and 3 Amano shrimp with one male killifish, who is fixing to be transplanted to my 10gal with a few fairly good sized blue tetras. I want do breed amanos and cherry shrimp if at all possible, but was just wondering if anyone has and words of wisdom for a beginner?

I also got another 10 from Aquabid. Last night when i was trying to count them there were around 40+. I have done nothing special with the tank (2.5gal) just normal cleaning and water changes.
As far as breeding Amano shrimp that seems like a pretty hard task. After hatching the larvae need to be transfered to brackish/salt water. Here is some info on them.

If thats the case about Amanos....they might just have to wait until a later date when i have more room and time to deal with them....(i'm in a dorm room)
Have you successfully bred amano by accident in a community tank? From everything I have studied about their complex larval stages, that is quite a feat.
I'm starting with the cherry shrimp which are very easy to breed because they hatch as fully formed juveniles right from the eggs.
I ordered from two different sellers on aquabid and am very happy. One seller who promised 10 gave me at least 20 including a pregnant female. Another seller gave some nice bonus items like young red/orange ramshorn snails and MTS snails that I have been wanting. I have about 40 shrimp, but most of them are too small to easily find in my tank. But I did receive a few nice adults and larger juveniles so I can at least see and enjoy them immediately.
You can read a lot about breeding on the forums at www.petshrimp.com, but I'll warn you not to post any newbie questions there without thoroughly searching! It does not seem to be a very friendly forum if you ask any question that could not be answered by thoroughly researching the entire site first. I've never seen a site less friendly to newbies, but there is good information there. The site owner's negative attitude toward curious newbies who don't search every thread in his forum is the reason why I did not order my shrimp from him.

just take out all the fish and leave them alone, they breed like crazy
its really realy hard to breed amanos unless your job is to breed them.
if youw an to breed cherry you should take out amano because they will eat the baby cherrys

Let me clarify I havent bred amanos by accident...I bred ghost shrimp by accident. So basically just take the tank and take out the ghost and amanos and then throw in the cherry shrimp and thats about it?
You can leave the ghost and amano shrimp in the same tank, but many of the breeders keep their species separated.
I've had ghost shrimp with eggs, but I've never had them hatch successfully (of if they have the babies have been eaten by my fish).
But yes, if you just toss cherry shrimp into a tank, they will breed.

Ghosts are not hard to breed either, but Cherry Reds are easier as they never seen to bother their own offspring, and Ghosts may.
