I am setting up a FOWLR 30g (12x36x18). I have the tank, ~3inches of substrate (Southdown/OldCastle), a protein skimmer (Aquac Remora Maxi-1200), and some power heads. The hood is still in the woodshop and will be finished in about a week or two. I also have some homemade base rock curing in a tub (Portland/oyster shell).

Now the question:
Can I get the tank going with some "live sand" and "Live rock" seed. Do I need lights? I have an old NO fluorescent I can put on until the T5s hood is ready. I realize that nothing will spread to the base rock unitl I put it in when it finished curing in 5-6 weeks. Basically, can I cycle the tank whle the hood and home rocks are in hte finishing stages? Multitasking??

Yes, yes and yes.

You don't need the t5's to cycle, the no fluorescents will be just fine while cycling........you are on your way
