I'm curious as to whether anyone here measures the real water flow of their filters, canisters, etc.

Over the years I've used all sorts of bought and home made filters and bought plenty of pumps (and modified many).

What I have found (as I'm sure others also have) is that the real flow is usually way less than the ideal rated flow. This is not unusual as the flow is going to depend on media and hoses and so forth. But I'm curious as to what real flow there is.

I moved to canisters recently from some home made systems in an effort to give the tanks and the room a cleaner, less cluttered look and keep the wife happy :) Since I needed a few filters, I just got cheap way-oversize Chinese filters knowing they would work below rating. They have plenty of media volume (7lt) and I can always use an external pump. I found the 1500lt filters circulated at 500-600lt/hr once I put some decent tubing on them so I was quite happy with them for the price. I've also tied other pumps and filters and know they also have a real flow that's 50-75% of the rated flow.

So when working out turnover in the tank, are people using real flow or rated flow? Have we checked real flow? Some filters have a flow meter, so how accurate is that compared to a real flow?

Thanks, Just curious... :)

Haven't purposely measured any, but I always cut the rated flow in half, then plan for for my needs

With my sumps I rate the actual flow (or get pretty close)

Almost all fitlers and pumps are rated at 0 ft of head pressure with no media for least resistance.

I suppose you could tell by measuring how much water it pumps into a bucket in 1 minute and mutiply by 60.

Yep. I usually see how long it takes to fill a 1 or 2 liter container and work it out from there...
