So far so good... amazzon sword, cabomba's, driftwood, slate and nice substrate... been cycling for 3 weeks now (using biospira! it worked!) and I'm good to go... now the hard part... stocking it =)

So far this is what I have decided upon to place in my tank... please input is greatly appreciated also if you dont see a fish here that would be a great replacement for another or filler please help me out! South American Amazon Basin/River fish only plz =D

Green Severum X1
Black Ghost Knifefish X1
Marbled Vieled Angelfish X2
Pictus Catfish X3
Medium Sized Sailfin Pleco X1
Panda Cory Cats X4

These are other fish I am considering as replacements... IE only 2 pictus's and add some larger tetras or replace the plecto and cories with otto's and kuhli loaches...

1" Otto's x3
3" Kuhli Loaches x3
3" Buenos Aires Tetra X5
3" Congo Tetra x5

I definetly want the Angel/Severum/Knifefish though... so non negotiable there =)

Plz help me out guys I am a LONG time forum browser but never really had a reason to post =)

Thanks in advance =)

BTW Tank specs... 55 Gallon 48"x13"20" standard size...
Filtration: Magnum 350 Canister Pro with 2 Biowheel's
Powerheads: 1x Penguin 660 for aeration and a lil movement
Heater: 250watt Visitherm Stealth
(If you think I need anything else please let me know as well!)

BGKs get far to large for a 55 gallon. they get to 2 feet long and therefore need at least 200 gallons.

pictus catfish also get pretty big, with one species being 6 inches and the other reaching to 10 inches, and haveing three of them, two angels, a severum, and then still a pleco and corydoras, you tank would be severly OS. IMO you should ditch them all together.

unless you introduce the angels at the SAME time and they are of near to or equal size, you could have aggression issues, but in a 55 gallon it should be ok.

your tank could consist of
1 severum
2 angles
6 corydoras
6 tetras such as lemons, diamonds, or red eyes.

Yeah I am definetly considering ex'ing out the pictus.... although I likem damnit... my LFS is making sure to get me the 6" strain... catfishheaven.com is a big help =)

Also what about algae eaters how many otto's would it take 2 months down the line when I have enough algae established to clean a 55 gallon tank with a ton of driftwood... (it's just sad not to have a pleco with all that driftwood to chew on =P)

as far as the BGK.. thats disheartening... I spoke with my friend who runs the LFS and he suggested they live for years and years that I could keep one till it reached a foot then he'd take it back for an easy re-sell.... thats always an option... what do you think? he stated that it took almost 3 years for his in a 120 gallon from 3" to 10"'s.... sounds like the grow stupid slow hmmm....

by the way yah I am getting the severum young at 4 inches and my angels are already around 4" so there shouldn't be an issue =D

IMO it is NOT ok to use a fish for your personal enjoyment and then return it after it gets "too big to deal with."

I'm sorry I've just seen way too many of these threads lately . . . I think that if you take in a fish, you should do whatever it takes to give that fish the best life possible, for the rest of its life.

This is my stocking plan for my 55 - it's similar to yours. I'd like to end up with a severum w/ a pair of angels, and a couple of small plecos like a butterfly or a bristlenose. I'm keeping some zebra danios in there until my fish get larger, at which point they'll get moved to another tank. Some pencilfish might be neat if you want something South American, I know danios are boring, but I already had some, and I actually like them. They are fun to watch. :) They will keep my tank from looking empty for a while until my two inch long sev starts to come out from the rocks. lol

Watch the severum around your plants!

Do you have any fish in the tank now? It sounds as if you added bio-spira three weeks ago and no fish. Good possibility any added bacteria is long ago dead.

IMO i would have 2 Green Severums, the Angels, a smaller pleco (something that is max at around 6-9") and some corys but not panda's I'd go for something bigger.

I would also opt for either a pair of green sevs or 3-4 angels, a group of cories and maybe either a small plec or a school of rummynose or something like that.
