I think there is a huge variation among the fish departments at Petsmarts. While the one near me seems to do great in terms of the condition of the fish, however the variety is pretty much non-existent.

Hmmm.. careful what you wish for. Many people believe that keeping fish in glass boxes is the main problem, that it's cruel and should be outlawed. Legislation may be a dangerous solution to a complex issue.

In the UK, animal cruelty laws extend to fish, but not in the U.S. That is also why feeder fish, dyed/tattooed fish and genetically modified fish are not allowed there. I subscribe to Practical Fishkeeping (a UK magazine), that is the only reason I am aware of this.

Well the issue is animals are considered personal property in most states and counties, unless you have a local animal services that regulates local ordinances some of these places can get out of control, and are usually handled by local law enforcement in which case most local law enforcement agencies do not want to be bothered by an animal complaint which usually translate to a civil issue, but Austin to take a poll or sign a petition is asinine we do not need local government to dictate what our fish hobby would allow, they already do this with some species either good or bad, we as hobbyist need to spread the word, so how many times have we as hobbyist been at a local wally world or a big box store and heard misinformed employees give wrong information, well i have several times and i will challenge and point out the correct information to a possible beginner even with that employee present, they may not like it but at least i give them the correct information, the way i see it is if i stand back and do not say anything i am just as guilty..

In my opinion Petsmart is far superior then Petco in the fish dept.. BUT they both fail miserably on housing each species correctly(ie. proper ph, proper tank mates, etc.) When i went into my local petsmart the other day and saw my favorite species of Africans (Tropheus) now being displayed in their fish tank, I thought to myself, ok this might not be as bad as i think. So, i searched out the wet pet specialists and asked BOTH of them...feeding,housing, ph specific questions. The answer was pretty much what i expected. They both gave me different answers to all questions of which they got none of my questions correct!!! so according to them did you know after all these years of keeping tropheus that i have been wasting time and money because "it doesn't matter on the ph all tropical fish are hardy and can handle a wide range of ph!" and "any cichlid pellet or tropical flake will be fine.. they gobble it up here!" i figured that was going to be the answers i got since they had oscars in the same tank with Tropheus duboisi maswa!!

ok, so i agree with the previous poster that worked for petsmart... there are definitely a few stores that have qualified people maning their fish rooms but as a corporation in general, Their training programs are weak and spotty at best with no regards for the animals actual needs. just my 2c..

If you hate petsmart why were you shopping there in the first place? You realize whatever "lfs" you frequent is hooked up to a centralized system too, right? Its impossible to cater to the exact needs of every fish in a shop. Its temporary no matter what. I wish the people who complain about petsmarts, lfs, ect. would try to start a shop and see how long their business would last if you did what you think fish suppliers should be doing...
