Does anyone know of a site for bird owners that is equally as awesome as AC? Well..it is probably not possible to be AS awesome but pretty good? What I want to do is to put a small tree in the corner of my home in a cage and put some birds in it. The goal is to have a conversation piece, to have something that is aesthetically pleasing and natural that will add to the ambience of the room but I don't want to end up with a maintenance nightmare and something that stinks.

What kind of bird(s) you getting? :)

I am not sure yet. That is why I want some awesome websites to read to get an idea. I have thought about getting a variety of finches because of the variety in colors but finches are small. Parakeets look too unnatural - I want a fairly natural scene, maybe even like a biotope, so that my students can learn something about the cage. Still, finches are small and cheap.

My main questions now deal with the issue of taking care of them, especially with the issue of smell. Birds in a cage can be maintained daily to avoid smell but a 5' tree in a cage with 8-12 finches....how can I keep that from smelling? What about putting a squirrel in with the birds? And a small "pond" in the bottom with a turtle?

i dont know of any websites.

BUT

i have tons of finches, they are great little non-demanding birds..i would reccomend them.

keep the cage well ventilated and clean every 2-3 days, thats how i keep the smell at bay.

i'd go with a group of society finches

Finch smell is minimal - the dander associated w/ the feathers is the chief source of odor (in my opinion).

I must warn you - the bird related sites I've seen in the past will not appreciate viewing birds as a conversation piece - better be wearing your flame retardant suit when you post... they can be a touchy lot.
