First tank ideas for a little girl

We'll just have to let him down nicely about the sharks. ;) We aren't going to put anything into a 10g that shouldn't be in there. I just thought I would ask because I surely don't know of every species of fish out there.
Btw, she is 8 and her brother is 12. They are with their dad this weekend, so i'll have to wait until the start of the week. I'll repost when I have some more details. :)

Change of plans! lol We are going with a bigger tank afterall. :D My husband said this evening, we should just use our 20L instead of the 10g. The good thing about it is, we already have the hood, lights, moonlight, etc. So now I have to change my thinking on this. Oh boy. :D

Great!...Those kids must be impatient to get their new fish by now.
Guess I've already made my suggestions for a twenty gal.

at that age, i would recommend a single fish such as a betta. it instills the value of a single life, and makes them intrinsically be more responsible. for example, if it was a school of tetras, she might not really name each one of them, and it would just be eye candy and one dead tetra would be no big deal.
besides, bettas are hard to kill, beautiful, and not all that expensive.

Good idea, but bettas tend to only last a year or so, once you get them from a LFS. The short life span may be traumatic for her. Something simple, such as guppies or zebra danios or neon tetras would be active, hardy and simple to keep/find.

lol, no they aren't impatient. They knew from the start we wouldn't be starting the tank until next weekend or the following week. :)

if your betta only lasted a year, then you must've been doing something wrong. and then you suggest fish like guppies? right.

My children's (ages 3,4,10) favourites are by far my brochis and above all else they LOVE my brig snails. I am considering turning my 10g into an invert tank for them. Their second favorite are the brochis because of their antics. You could then add a school of cardinals and a betta and have a nice, active, engaging tank.
