I realized the cat food eating part when we fed one a piece of cat food and it went to town on it! We've fed them raspberries too and they loved them. I read up on them, yeah, they are native and do little to no damage to vegetation as they are mostly scavengers and more on the carnivorous side, whereas those smaller brownish garden slugs are the culprits behind many a destroyed hosta and other plants, which are like you said, non-natives.
