I'd try treating with "Maracyn-Two" It's a broad spectrum anti-biotic that treats most bacterial infections. Not very good for fungal, but you're not noticing any white fluffs, etc so I think we can rule that out. At this point I don't think it's going to hurt...
Well this morning it was an oto that I lost. I decided to try feeding them some anti bac and anti parasite food last night before bed. Figured I had nothing to lose. This morning, other than the oto dying everyone looks fine. I looked at the dead oto closely and other than being dead, he looked fine. No raw spots, no missing or pushed up scales, no nothing out of the ordinary. I've almost resigned myself to losing the whole tank, but I will try the Maracyn 2 tonight when I get home from work.
Also forgot to mention that this tank has a 15w UV on it 24/7 and has had for 2 months. I've checked it and it's still on and working.
Man this is disappointing since this is my favorite tank.
My guess is that it is a contaminant in the water or the tank (not nitrogen-cycle related that as you've posted totally acceptable parameters in your first post), rather than a parasite if there are no visible signs of disease; however, as you say it's your favourite tank I'm assuming you've got others running that are perfectly OK.
That was my thoughts as well since I am not seeing any other signs of illness other than the occassional flashing. That's why I thought I would try the carbon last night to see if that fixes it. It'll be interesting to see what I find when I get home.
And yeah the tank is fully cycled and heavily planted. The only thing I have added to the water (ever) is some nitrates when they have dropped below 10ppm and only enough to get the nitrates up to about 15ppm
Well, I got home today. No new deaths. However I find that one of my other pets has knocked the plug partially out on my 55g. According to my light timer, it was out since 8:45 this morning.
Glad to hear no deaths...doesn't that just seem to be the way things go something nice happens then something off happens, was it just the light that was off? If this is the case then "no worries"
Depending how warm your house is this time of year, temperature shouldn't be too much of a problem. Keep an eye on ammonia levels in this tank in case the filtration being down has reduced your bacterial level though.
I once came back to my flat over Christmas to find my landlords had unplugged the tanks, then put the plugs back in but not far enough to work- 2 totally dead tanks:wall:
Well, after much searching there doesn't seem to be any deaths this morning so I am keeping my fingers crossed. A couple fish are still flashing though with no signs of anything wrong. Once that stops. I'll feel much better.
