A friend sold his house and did not want to take his aquarium, I've never had an aquarium so I said hey I'll take it. It's a 55 Gallon tank, came fully packed with 4 fish. ( I don't know what they are I'll try to post pictures over the weekend ) One of the fish is completely blind and seems old, but he's a warrior and I don't want to let him go. There's one that's very hostile, pokes and bites at 2 of the fishes (one of them is a bottom-feeder, the ones that just stick to the glass so he's not bothered) he only does it when no one is watching him, as if he knew it's wrong. We're thinking of getting rid of it by dumping it in a lake near our house, don't know if that's the right thing to do. I did a full cycle when i got the tank. The bottom feeder had some bruises on his belly, but I checked yesterday and he seems to be coming along, I added the fungus drops after I did the cycle, and did it again last night. By the way I have two filters for 55 Gallons running, I don't know if that's overkill but my tank is perfect clear. I want to add more fish to the tank but I'll have to post pics so you guys can see which fish are compatible with the ones I know have. Thanks for reading this huge explanation. Oh and I forgot to add, I'm loving my aquarium, feeding them before I go to work and when I get home from work. If I wake up at night I take a little peek, to check on the bully.

I definately would not dump the fish in any local body of water. Not only is it possibly unhealthy for the fish but it can be very unhealthy for the local ecology. I would suggest asking a lfs local fish store if they would take it off your hands. It is rare that they would purchase the animal but they may be willing to take it for free.

agreed!!! Definately don't dump them in the lake. . . .

Hi and welcome to another NJ person I live in Pennington. The one fish sounds Like a Pleco. They are very tough fish.
Never dump fish in a lake or stream they can do a lot of harm, in NJ they will never survive the fall let alone the winter.

yea the one is a pleco, he's perfectly healthy, I went home for lunch today and the one fish was harrasing the others, I don't know what to do with it, as I want to get rid of it (not killing it or putting it in a lake as I learned) so I can add more fish, currently only 4 in a 55 gallon tank, I want more fishies! . Call a local store that sells fish and ask them if they would take the fish, don't expect to be paid for them just find them a good store that will find them homes. I adopted my pleco that way, someone had dropped him off in a large Ziploc bag and they gave him to me. I am in NY, not too far away. The fish would die in a local body of water since they are tropical, not too mention possible environmental issues. Private message me if you can't find a place that will take them, maybe I can help. Start a thread in the freshwater newbie forum, giving as many details as you can about the tank, including those pics. If you have a test kit, also post the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings.
